Commercial growth

Before buying more leads, check your follow-up

An enquiry needs a route to revenue. Before investing in more leads, check how your sales process handles the interest you already have.

What should a business check before buying more leads?

Before increasing lead generation, review how current enquiries are handled. Check response, qualification, ownership and the next action. Track where suitable opportunities stop moving, then fix the process before deciding whether more lead volume is the right investment.

Look at the whole route to a customer

Lead generation is one part of the commercial picture. An enquiry still needs a response, a relevant conversation and an agreed next step.

If those steps are inconsistent, adding more enquiries can increase the workload without solving the underlying problem. I want to understand what happens after someone expresses interest before recommending more activity.

Review real opportunities

Choose a small set of recent enquiries and work through them. When did each arrive? Who responded? Was the customer a good fit? What happened after the first conversation?

Look for places where ownership or the next action became unclear. This gives you a more useful diagnosis than assuming the business simply needs more leads.

Make the next step specific

A contact record becomes useful when it tells the team what should happen next. That might be a call, a proposal, a meeting or a follow-up after a decision date.

Give the action an owner and a date. Keep enough context for that person to continue the conversation properly. Review the open opportunities regularly.

Measure what reaches the business

Track enquiries alongside qualified conversations, proposals and customer wins. Those stages help you see where the process needs attention.

Once follow-up is consistent, assess whether more lead generation is the right investment. The goal is to convert suitable interest into customers and revenue, with a clear view of what it costs to do so.
